Week #3 - Summer 2023 Litter

Updated: Jul 6

Weekly Litter Update - June 29, 2023

The puppies are more active now and enjoy playing together. We have finished ENS and ESI and moved on to item and noise exposure. All the puppies are curious about everything and especially enjoy the crinkle toy. Fiji and Capri seem to be the most adventurous and are usually the first to investigate. They have also started making little noises, and their teeth have come out, which means they will soon start eating puppy mush. It's amazing to witness how quickly they are growing, and it's enjoyable to observe their unique personalities emerging.

Puppy Weight Tracker

During the first two weeks, we weigh the puppies twice a day. After that, we transition to a weekly weigh-in. The chart below only displays the average of the two weights for that day. Because the puppies are so small, weights are taken in ounces.

Puppy Behavior and Training - House Training

When it comes to potty training puppies, it's important to remember that they don't automatically know to go outside. As the owner, it's up to you to communicate your desire for them to use the restroom outside and encourage them through positive reinforcement. Each time your puppy goes outside, reward them with praise or a small treat. However, if they have an accident indoors, it can set them back.

At Oak and Magnolia, we suggest designating a specific spot in your yard as your puppy's "bathroom" spot. Whenever you take them outside, use a leash to guide them to that spot and keep them focused. Once they go, reward them and let them explore and play if it's safe. Young puppies need to be let outside frequently, usually every one to two hours. Taking them out first thing in the morning, immediately when you return home, after meals, when they wake up, and before bed is important.

To successfully potty train your puppy, it's important to be attentive and watchful for signs they need to go, such as sniffing the ground, circling, or stopping play. If you can't supervise them, use a crate or exercise pen to prevent accidents.

O&M Helpers

At Oak and Magnolia, raising a litter of puppies is a collaborative effort that involves the whole family. While the adults take care of the bulk of the load, communication with families, and other front-end tasks, we have a dedicated group of kids who work behind the scenes to make O&M what it is. These awesome kids help with tasks such as feeding, cleaning up after the puppies, playing with them, taking them on walks, and giving Mama Oakley some love while she nurses her babies. Most importantly, they assist us in socializing the puppies to prepare them for their forever homes. We truly value the work these kids do and believe that it is priceless. We want to give these girls and guys a big shoutout for helping us raise amazing family puppies. We love you, Kiddos!
